What is BEB?

Blepharospasm may appear as frequent blinking, squinting of both eyes, spasms of eyelid closure, or simply difficulty in keeping the eyes open.

Blepharospasm is often misdiagnosed because of lack of awareness of the conditon. Too often it may be initially diagnosed erroneously and effective treatment delayed.

Treatment

Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injections into the muscles around the eye weaken those muscles and often provide temporary (several months) relief of forced eyelid closure. It is currently the most widely used treatment. Some patients experience mild temporary side effects such as ptosis or blurred vision.

An interesting insight into the condition can be found in a transcript of a radio interview with a former GP who has the condition - it mirrors the difficulty most people have in obtaining a correct diagnosis.
